Measures from 31 to 41 cm in length, and the weight of the male varies between 206-290 grams and the female 257-350 grams, with males 20% smaller than the profile.
There is a big difference between adults and immatures, and the latter can be confused with several other hawks, as they have a red-carijó coloration. Adults, on the other hand, have a black tip with a yellowish base; the head and top of the wings are brownish, but turn gray as the bird matures. The chest is ferruginous and has wide vertical streaks. The belly and legs are white, with an exquisite rust bar. The base of the tail is white, but it becomes barred towards the end. There are two sharp black stripes on the end of the tail. When in flight, its wings are wide and of medium length. The basic coloring of the underside of the wings is striated beige with fine dark stripes.
Dark beak with yellow wax. The iris is clear. Tarsi and feet are yellow and have dark claws.
