Retro vs. Vintage Clothing: What's the Difference?
Many people are unfamiliar with the distinctions between vintage and retro clothing, but if you want to wow your fashionable friends at the next social gathering, study the definitions of each term! They share some parallels, but there are several key differences to be aware of.
Vintage clothing
refers to clothing that was created in the 1920s or later (but not later than 20 years before the present year). It refers to the item's age rather than its appearance. People frequently mistakenly refer to a modern-day 1920s flapper dress from a fancy dress store as "vintage," but it isn't unless it was produced 20 years ago (or earlier). Even though it has an ancient style, it cannot be considered vintage if it was made within the last 20 years.
In 2016, anything manufactured between the years 1920 and 1996 is considered vintage, yet this does not imply that everything has a vintage appeal. Fur coats, for example, were very fashionable in the 1960s, and they are now deemed vintage because they were created during that time period as well. Despite the controversy that has surrounded fur jackets since the 1980s, many fashionistas find them charming. A fur coat has a different charm than a typical blouse from 1955.
Vintage can also refer to clocks and other ornaments (such as lava lamps from the 1970s), as well as radios, cars, cabinets, and jewelry.
Clothing from the past
Retro clothing, unlike vintage clothing, does not refer to a specific time period in which it was developed. Rather, the term "retro" refers to the way the goods are created. Retro clothing is clothing that was manufactured recently with the purpose of emulating the fashion of the past. Many clothing businesses aim to resurrect former fashion trends by designing garments that were popular in the 1980s and 1990s, for example. These aren't vintage, but they are retro.
Vintage styles and patterns can be reintroduced into today's fashion through retro clothes. It also enables users to achieve a 'old-fashioned' or 'vintage' style without having to search eBay for authentic vintage clothing.
When it comes to things meant to look like those from roughly 20 years ago, the term'retro' is most widely employed. It refers to anything that is made to look like anything from the recent past.
'Retro,' like the term 'vintage,' isn't limited to apparel. Retro can also refer to music, household items, and toys.
