Germany: Berliners march to pressure future govt coalition for social justice and climate protection

Hunderte Demonstranten gingen am Sonntag in Berlin auf die Straße und forderten von der künftigen Ampelkoalition, die voraussichtlich die neue Bundesregierung bilden wird, soziale Gerechtigkeit und bessere Klimaschutzmaßnahmen.

"Klimaneutralität ist keine soziale Gerechtigkeit und deshalb sind wir heute hier. Wir sagen, dass wir eine Klimapolitik brauchen, die fair ist und nicht den Markt, sondern die Menschen in den Mittelpunkt stellt", sagte Klimaaktivist Philip auf der Veranstaltung.

Zu der Demonstration, die vor dem Bundeskanzleramt in Berlin-Moabit endete, hatte das Bündnis "Gerechtigkeit jetzt!" aufgerufen und rund 700 Menschen versammelt.

Eine neue Regierung ist zwar noch nicht gebildet, aber die Ampelkoalition aus Grünen, SPD und der marktliberalen FDP will bis Anfang Dezember den neuen Kanzler stellen.

Die Parteien haben sich bisher auf die Festlegung von Klimazielen für die neue Regierung geeinigt, aber auch darauf, dass es keine neuen Formen der Besteuerung oder eine Abkehr von der sogenannten Schuldenbremse geben wird, wie es die FDP fordert, die die Mittelvergabe und Investitionen für Großprojekte erschwert.

Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets on Sunday in Berlin demanding social justice and better climate measures to be adopted by the future 'traffic light' coalition that is likely to form the new federal government.

“Being climate neutral is not social justice and that’s why we are here today. We say that we need a climate policy that is fair and does not put the market first but the people,” climate activist Philip said at the event.

The march was called by the alliance 'Justice Now!' and gathered around 700 people, ending in front of the German chancellery in Berlin Moabit.

While a new government has not been formed yet, the 'traffic light' coalition comprising the Greens, the SPD and the market-liberal FDP expect to appoint the install the new chancellor by early December.

The parties have so far agreed upon climate goals being set in place for the new government but also mentioned no new forms of taxation or a departure from the so-called debt brake would be implemented as demanded by the FDP, making allocating funds and investment difficult for large scale projects.

"Ser neutral con el clima no es justicia social y por eso estamos hoy aquí. Decimos que necesitamos una política climática que sea justa y que no ponga en primer lugar al mercado, sino a las personas", dijo el activista climático Philip en el acto.

La marcha, convocada por la alianza "¡Justicia ya!", reunió a unas 700 personas y terminó frente a la cancillería alemana en Berlín Moabit.

Aunque todavía no se ha formado un nuevo gobierno, la coalición "semáforo", formada por los Verdes, el SPD y el liberal de mercado FDP, espera nombrar al nuevo canciller a principios de diciembre.

De momento, los partidos han acordado que el nuevo gobierno se fije objetivos climáticos, pero también han mencionado que no se aplicarán nuevas formas de fiscalidad ni se abandonará el llamado "freno de la deuda", como exige el FDP, lo que dificulta la asignación de fondos e inversiones para proyectos a gran escala.
