An earthquake brought McGillicuddy out of his sleep. He was relieved, for he had been dreaming. Dreaming was probably close to his least favorite thing to do. Each one of them was a nightmare of faces and places and times all jumbled together. Pure and utter chaos, as his mind tried ineffectively to sort out the muddle in his brain.
He hunkered down until the shaking stopped. Lit a holocig, took a swig from his flask and grimaced as the heat burned his uvula and smirked as it slid down his throat. He smacked his lips and exhaled sharply in satisfaction, wondering where he had got ahold of real whiskey. He took another swig as he viewed his surroundings, trying to remember where he was and what assignment he was on. When his memory failed him, he checked his metal arm. It showed him pictures and notes he’d taken, which helped trigger his memory. He was pleased to find that he was very close to one of his targets. He straightened his hat, he tightened his bolo tie, he arranged his gentleman parts in his jeans. He glanced down one side of the corridor, but it was dark, he glanced the other way, and it was lit. The choice was obvious...
