Awesome Dog mother feeding her puppies..

After delivery and throughout nursing, the mother's energy needs increase. She may require 2-4 times the energy calories of a normal healthy adult at her peak energy need, 3-5 weeks after whelping (giving birth). Around eight weeks after delivery, when the puppies are entirely weaned, the mother's energy requirement will drop and return to normal.

The mother can increase her food intake after the puppies are born, but the energy density of the food must be sufficient, or she will not be physiologically able to maintain milk production, weight, and body condition. Feedings can be fine-tuned based on her bodily state, which is assessed on a regular basis. Feeding during breastfeeding, like the third trimester of pregnancy, is best performed with a high-digestibility, high-quality puppy formulation.

Unless she only has one or two puppies, free-choice feeding during the first 3 to 4 weeks of breastfeeding has numerous advantages. The mother can eat on her own timetable, consuming decreasing portions of food each time she eats, and the puppies can start tasting solid food as soon as they are able (at about 3 weeks of age).
