Grabar & Zinn — Defending the apologists and the critics.

weasel words, weasel words, weasel words...

All critics fall into the same logical traps and biases as the people they are critiquing. Each side will always call proponents of the other side names like Propagandist. We can save babies from the drain and still face up to our mistakes and the changes that inevitably arise throughout our time.

Yes, slavery has been around in many cultures throughout history. And? Maybe Benjamin Franklin was a very nice man in many respects and a scoundrel in others. So? Gosh, people are not perfect. Sin is sin, and nasty stuff happens to innocent people. Homo Sapiens are a rough lot.

Let's all chose a side to defend and start killing each other to preserve our values. There is nothing new under the sun. Listen to all the weasel words in the conversation below. I'm telling you, no one is immune.

Christians will defend Christianity, and Muslims will protect Islam. Like, they have been doing that for centuries. Where do we go from here? Can we keep the good bits and throw out the bad bits?

Or maybe we keep investing our resources in finding new ways to kill each other.

This conversation from the Skeptic Magazine podcast is fun, and it drives me nuts. (I appreciate the way Michael Shermer approached this conversation.)

Whatever side you are on, you can find biased perspectives that will appeal to you.

Mary is involved with The Alexander Hamilton Institute for the Study of Western Civilization. Think critically about their perspective and what they are defending, and the particular narrative they espouse (generally).
