Coley's Toxins Documentary: Dr. William Coley: The Father of Cancer Immunotherapy

Have you ever heard of Coley's toxins? Immunotherapy for cancer is all the rage right now, especially after winning a Nobel Prize in 2018.

But did you know that immunotherapy for cancer was actually discovered by bone surgeon, William B. Coley in 1891?

He noticed that some of his patients went into spontaneous remission after developing erysipelas (a bacterial infection).

Seeking to recreate the “immune” response created by the infection, Coley began injecting patients with live and dead versions of the Streptococcus bacteria.

Coley achieved responses such as durable complete remission in several types of cancer.
