Poland: Crowds attend pro-EU rally in Warsaw - 10.10.2021

Protesters flooded central Warsaw on Sunday to denounce the Constitutional Court's recent ruling on the supremacy of the Polish constitution over some EU laws. Protesters can be seen waving EU flags, including holding a giant one, while showing peace signs and pro-EU banners. The ruling is a huge blow to the primacy of EU law, a fundamental concept of the bloc. It has also ignited fears of Poland exiting the EU, despite membership being popular among the majority of citizens according to recent polling. Former EU chief Donald Tusk and current leader of Civic Platform called for protesters to gather on Sunday in to support the country's membership of the bloc, to which many obliged. Former Polish president Lech Walesa also reportedly took part in the protests. The current ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party has been accused of undermining judicial independence and rolling back democratic freedoms while also stacking the constitutional court with it's allies. The PiS government responded by reassuring a 'Polexit' will not happen, with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki saying after the court's ruling that Poland's membership in the EU was "one of the highlights of the last decades."
