The ukulele is a guitar-like instrument with a tiny body. Portuguese immigrants from Madeira introduced it to Hawaii. During the early twentieth century, it became quite popular in other parts of the United States, and from there it spread all over the world.

The instrument's tone and volume vary depending on its size and construction. Soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone ukuleles are the most prevalent sizes.
