When can you tell if a politician is lying? When his mouth is open.
Governments are controlled by politicians.
Master politician Lyndon Baines Johnson claimed his Great Society would end poverty. Government measures of poverty are down, largely due to income redistribution from the middle class to those previously below the poverty line. The result is a new kind of poverty. Those on welfare, broadly defined, and idle are taking more drugs out of boredom. Those in the middle class are taking more drugs out of frustration.
Enter Nixon's drug war. It didn't end drug abuse. Drug abuse is increasing.
Drugs are happily supplied by diligent farmers in Mexico, Afghanistan, Colombia and elsewhere.
Meanwhile, our largely free market economy finally brought the Soviet Union to its knees and inspired China to copy capitalism. The Cold War ended. Left without an enemy, the military/industrial complex cast about for a new one. When Iraq annexed bordering Kuwait, they found their chance and instituted a war on Islamic fundamentalism and terror, invading Iraq and Afghanistan. We've effectively lost the war in Iraq and just suffered a humiliating defeat in Afghanistan.
The war on poverty caused new problems. The war on drugs is an ongoing failure. The war on terror is a continuing debacle that is driving us into bankruptcy.
And now we believe politicians and their handpicked "medical experts" when they claim we can win a war against a virus by shutting down the small business sector, the most vibrant part of our economy?
