Greece: Clashes as teachers protest 'mandatory evaluation' law in Athens - 06.10.2021

Police clashed with schoolteachers protesting the ‘mandatory evaluation’ law, in Athens on Wednesday, defying a court order prohibiting teachers to strike against the new requirement. The education minister had asked the court to cancel any planned strikes, and the court ruled that any planned strikes were ‘illegal.’ The law in question will require teachers who fail their assessments or who fail to be up to speed in the classroom to face remedial training. The Primary Teachers Federation (DOE) stated it would have devastating consequences if the system failed to explain what approach made a teacher competent or effective in the classroom. A 24-hour strike is planned for October 11 by the DOE in Greece.
