RP Dad ~ White Cane Safety Day ~ October 15th

White Cane Safety Day is observed nationally on October 15th.
It came about when our U.S. President, Lyndon B. Johnson,
signed Proclamation 3622 on October 6th, 1964.

Proclamation 3622 (full text)
A white cane in our society has become one of the symbols of a blind person's ability to come and go on his own. Its use has promoted
courtesy and special consideration for the blind on our streets and highways.
To make our people more fully aware of the meaning of the white cane, and of the need for motorists to exercise special care for the blind persons who carry it, the Congress, by a joint resolution approved October 6, 1964, has authorized the President to proclaim October 15
of each year as White Cane Safety Day.
NOW, THEEEFORE, I, LYNDON B. JOHNSON, President of the
United States of America, do hereby proclaim October 15, 1964,
as White Cane Safety Day.
I urge civic and service organizations, schools, public bodies, and the media of public information to join in this observance with appropriate activities designed to promote continuing awareness of the significance of the white cane to blind persons.
I call upon all our citizens to make every effort to promote the safety and welfare of our blind persons on the streets and highways, and thereby
to contribute to their independence of spirit and their capability for
self-management.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States of America to be affixed.
DONE at the City of Washington this sixth day of October in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and sixty-four, and of [SEAL] the Independence of the United States of America the one hundred and eighty-ninth.
