Curiously, the Angara is the only river flowing out of Lake Baikal. The lake is remarkable for many reasons. The famous Baikal is located in Eastern Siberia, on the territory of two constituent entities of Russia at once: the Irkutsk region and the Republic of Buryatia. Since the size of the lake is very significant (the length is 620 kilometers), the locals call it the sea.
Baikal is also the largest freshwater reservoir on Earth. The lake is of tectonic origin and lies in a basin, and its depth reaches 1642 meters, which is a record among the lakes of our planet. Many inhabitants of the underwater world of Lake Baikal are endemic and generally form a unique ecosystem. The lake is included in the List of World Heritage Sites. There are several nature reserves, sanctuaries and national parks on the shores of Lake Baikal.
