At least 1,000 protesters marched through the streets of Barcelona, on the fourth anniversary of the Catalan independence referendum, on Friday. Republic Defence Committee (CDRs) called for the protest on social media. A group of protesters built a barricade of industrial bins, setting them fire. Police intervened, eventually dispersed the protest. At least four people were arrested. On 1 October 2017, the regional government of Catalonia called for an independence referendum. After the vote, the Catalan authorities reported a turnout of 42.3 percent and approval of around 90 percent of voters for independence from Spain. The referendum led to a constitutional crisis with the proclamation of an "independent republic" a few weeks later and the subsequent disempowerment of the Catalan regional government by the Spanish government. New regional parliament elections followed in December 2017.

Mindestens vier Personen wurden verhaftet. Am 1. Oktober 2017 rief die Regionalregierung von Katalonien zu einem Unabhängigkeitsreferendum auf. Nach der Abstimmung meldeten die katalanischen Behörden eine Wahlbeteiligung von 42,3 Prozent und eine Zustimmung von rund 90 Prozent der Wähler für die Unabhängigkeit von Spanien. Das Referendum führte zu einer Verfassungskrise mit der Ausrufung einer "unabhängigen Republik" einige Wochen später und der anschließenden Entmachtung der katalanischen Regionalregierung durch die spanische Regierung. Im Dezember 2017 folgten Neuwahlen zum Regionalparlament.

Tras la votación, las autoridades catalanas informaron de una participación del 42,3 por ciento y de la aprobación de alrededor del 90 por ciento de los votantes a favor de la independencia de España. El referéndum condujo a una crisis constitucional con la proclamación de una "república independiente" unas semanas después y la posterior desautorización del gobierno regional catalán por parte del gobierno español. En diciembre de 2017 se celebraron nuevas elecciones al Parlamento regional.
