#1 Get Started Growing Food Now Using Bins
Don’t wait. This is the quickest easiest way to learn to grow. Use bins you already have. But, depending on the plastic, they may not hold up in the elements for long. I suggest the HDX bins with the yellow lidsif you are buying them. A few months back, these bins cost around $14 USD each at Home Depot. The 27 gal size. These are big enough for growing most things, but still relatively easy to move if you need. You can use the lids to germinate seeds early while there are still frosts (cover at night) or while moving. You will be best to use a bottom filler with logs, twigs and wood chips. Holes in the bottom. The wood will retain some moisture for roots and add nutrients. If you don’t have chips… collect from the ground in open areas with broken branches and twigs. You will save money on soil. You should be able to get away with using only one 2 cu ft bag of soil with wood chips on bottom. If you can’t get wood chips, you’ll need about 1.5 to 2 bags of soil. At Home Depot, they run about $8 USD per bag.
Even if you aren’t ready to plant yet, get these ready now. Once you have these, you can start experimenting with direct sowing seeds and transplants from a nursery. You can raise them up on blocks and narrow boards or metal conduit pipes for easier access. And if you have rabbits, they won’t be able to get in. More videos about this.
