Thousands of followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church came to downtown Meskel Square in the heart of the capital Addis Ababa this afternoon to celebrate Demera, the annual bonfire lighting ceremony on the eve of Meskel's discovery of the true cross by St Helena in the fourth century AD.
