The Kingdom of God Is at Hand

In Mark 1, Jesus comes to Galilee and calls Simon and Peter whilst proclaiming that the Kingdom of God is at Hand. What does this mean? What Kingdom would Jesus' 1st century audience have understood him to be referring to? And why do Simon and Andrew seemingly drop everything and follow Jesus? Is this believable?
