Throughout Eurasia and North America, you'll find brown bears, scientifically known as Ursus arctos (Brown Bear). Brown bear populations in North America are referred to as grizzly bears, whereas the subspecies found in Alaska's Kodiak Islands is known as the Kodiak bear. When it comes to Carnivora, it is only surpassed in size by its closely related polar bear (Ursus maritimus), which has a far more stable body mass and is somewhat larger on average.

The range of the brown bear includes sections of Russia, Central Asia, China, Canada, the United States, Hokkaido, Scandinavia, Finland, the Balkans, the Picos de Europa and the Carpathian region (particularly Romania), Iran, Anatolia, and the Caucasus. In a number of European countries, the brown bear is revered as a national and state symbol.
