How did ordinary citizens become murderers?

In watching this film about German men and women who murdered Jewish women, men, children, and babies, I can't help but see the hardening of the hearts of Americans to the destruction of Americans' rights, the intensity of self-centeredness, and the willingness to destroy another person's property and murder innocent people.
