I watched them stand on the bank at the river's edge, each one stepping forward and assessing the crossing, then moving back to be absorbed into the coalition. Finally, the moment came when the opportunity for fresh browse outweighed the uncertainty, and the lead bull stepped forward, tasted the water with his trunk, emptied the remainder over his back, and began the process that the others would follow. For a good while, all one could see of them was the tops of their heads and trunks—now being used as snorkels. Slowly, the mass made its way across
like a great river monster. Then they rose as one from the water, transformed by the evening light into magnificent brass sculptures. As they moved from water to land again, I couldn’t help thinking that within such things lies the cure of evils; after witnessing such incredible beauty, surely it becomes impossible to manifest evil upon such extraordinary beings.
