Emerged during the colonial period, dance has roots in African religious cults, therefore it is marked by spirituality.
The term maracatu is associated with “dance” or “batuque” for Africans, which explains the use of drums, boxes and ganzás during the celebration.
Dressed in character in colorful clothes, the participants go out into the streets dancing, singing and playing the rhythms in devotion to the figures that are part of the maracatu folklore.
