BODYCAM: Officers Shoot Suspect As He Stabs His Mother

On Friday, August 13th, 2021, at 8:47 AM, the Bakersfield Police Department received a call regarding a peace disturbance in an apartment complex in the 200 block of Stephens Drive. The caller advised they could hear yelling from an apartment, between a male and a female and that the male subject was possibly under the influence of drugs. Several additional calls were received in the area, involving a male subject screaming and possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol. At 8:51 AM, responding officers attempted contact at an apartment in the complex. Officers contacted a neighbor who advised that the male subject was inside the apartment with his mother. They received additional information that the mother had given a neighbor a bag full of knives, to keep away from her son.

For approximately an hour, officers attempted to negotiate with the male subject to have his mother exit the residence so that officers could confirm she was uninjured. Officers observed that the male subject was still armed with a knife and appeared to be under the influence of drugs. Neighbors also advised a history of domestic violence. The first body worn camera is from a witness officer, as officers attempt to communicate with the mother and male subject who are yelling inside the apartment. Based upon what the officers heard, they believed that the female inside of the residence was being harmed and forced entry. Three officers discharged their firearms. Multiple knives were located next to the suspect. Medical aid was immediately summoned; however, the suspect succumbed to his injuries. The female victim was transported to an area hospital with several stab wounds.
