All You Need To Know About E10 Petrol
What exactly is E10 fuel?
It's petrol with twice as much bioethanol as the E5 unleaded already on the market in the UK: 10%, as the name says. Bioethanol is a blend of petrol and ethanol generated from low-quality cereals, sugars, and waste wood.
This type of fuel is offered in other parts of Europe, including France and Germany, and it may be used in all new cars built in Europe from 2011.
Despite the fact that it has been permitted to sell in the UK since 2013, fuel companies have chosen not to due to concerns that it will cause harm to older vehicles.
What exactly is the issue with E10?
According to the RAC Foundation, more than 634,000 cars on UK roads are incompatible with E10, with 150,000 of these vehicles manufactured after 2000.
“When E10 comes on the forecourts, drivers want to know if their vehicles will be damaged if they use it,” said Steve Gooding, director of the RAC Foundation.
“While some of those vehicles incompatible with E10 fuel will be historic types, many will be ancient but workable everyday runabouts that people on a low travel budget rely on to go around,”
The issue appears to be quite serious. The greater bioethanol concentration in E10 petrol is thought to dislodge deposits in older engines and fuel systems, causing clogs; it also has the potential to damage seals, gaskets, metals, and plastics.
What is the purpose of E10's introduction?
By 2021, the government's Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation requires that 9.75 percent of all transport fuels, such as biofuels, originate from renewable sources.
Fuel firms presently use 7% biodiesel in diesel and 5% bioethanol in unleaded petrol. The goal is to boost bioethanol content in petrol to 10%.
The adoption of E10 is intended to assist the government in meeting its climate change commitments. Bioethanol absorbs carbon dioxide, and switching to E10 is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2%.
Will unleaded E5 still be available?
Although E10 will eventually replace E5 unleaded gasoline at all filling stations, high-volume outlets that sell more than three million litres of fuel per year will continue to supply
