The cathedral was built in 1875 of white stone in the Romanesque style. In its place stood the first parish church in Monaco, built in 1252 in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The iconostasis (c. 1500), located to the right of the transept, the Great Altar and the Episcopal throne made of white Carrara marble, are noteworthy. The interior of the cathedral is decorated with paintings by Louis Brea.

Appointment
Papal services take place on major religious holidays such as St. Devot's Day (January 27) and National Day (November 19). During the holidays, the organ, established in 1976, sounds in the temple.

The coronation ceremony of the new Prince of Monaco takes place in the cathedral, with the participation of the Archbishop of Monaco.

From September to June, Les Petits Chanteurs de Monaco and the cathedral's school choir sing at 10:00 a.m. every Sunday. Also, every year on December 6, on the occasion of St. Nicholas Day, young children perform in the church.

Many famous people consecrate their marriage in St. Nicholas Cathedral. In 1956, in the temple, Prince Rainier III of Monaco married actress Grace Kelly.

Many members of the Grimaldi family are buried in the temple, including Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III.
