Lionel Messi came on as a second-half substitute to make his debut for Paris Saint-Germain in a 2-0 win over Ligue 1 side Reims on Sunday evening.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino introduced the six-time Ballon d’Or winner in the 66th minute, replacing Messi's friend and former Barcelona team-mate Neymar.

It was Messi's first ever club game in his career for a team other than Barcelona. Just before Messi made his debut, Kylian Mbappe struck his second goal of the game, latching onto Achraf Hakimi's cross. His first was a header, assisted by Angel di Maria in the 16th minute.

Mbappe’s future at the club hangs in the balance with deadline day looming. Real Madrid made a second offer worth up to €180 million (£154.4 million) for the PSG forward and the two clubs are now engaged in negotiations over a transfer, although they have not reached an agreement.

Upon signing for PSG, Messi insisted he was keen to play but admitted he would only feature when he and the staff felt he was ready. He has not played a game since winning the Copa America with Argentina but has been in full training with PSG.

Earlier this month, the Argentine completed a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at Barcelona in what was one of the shock moves of the summer.

It is understood the 34-year-old will be paid a sign-on fee of €25 million and has signed a two-year contract with a net salary of €25 million per year.
