National and World

In the Olympics before the fall of communism in the Soviet Union and eastern Europe, though the countries were communist, and thus were third world countries that were massively dysfunctional and oppressed their people, they had great Olympic teams. It's similar with many families in that they are dysfunctional, but their kids are successful at organized youth sports. The communist countries emphasized and essentially forced great Olympic teams so they could be used to create the facade that things were going well in the country in hopes the people would have pride in the country and think it was great despite the disastrous shape of the country. It's similar with many families, they are dysfunctional in many ways, but they strongly push their kids to be successful at sports so the family can have its self worth uplifted. The kids can see through this, but they go along out of a desire of gaining the love of their parents, something that is usually missing from strongly dysfunctional families.
There are many countries in Central and South America that are socialist or worse, but soccer is a religion in those counties. No matter how bad the country operates or how the people are oppressed, the soccer teams are often strong and have a huge following in those nations. They get so into the World Cup and soccer games in general despite living in the squalor that the oppressive systems have trapped them in. The soccer games give them a brief respite and even cause them to have pride in their countries despite being oppressed by them.
And families can tell themselves that their families are going good because their kids are in sports despite all of the underlying dysfunction in the family.
Again, organized sports gets in the way of authentic play for young kids especially. Kids need free authentic play. It is nothing short of abuse to use kids to uplift the family through participation in organized youth sports. Sadly, organized youth sports are used to fraudulently improve a families self worth. It can actually make things worse because it increases denial.
