This old adage raises the question as to whether the notion that going to bed (and going to sleep) early is better for health can be proved. I believe the adage reflects a truism about resting hours that is supported fairly well in the scientific literature. In this video, I have a look at the scientific research and its context, the basics of the sleep cycles, REM and deep/slow-wave sleep, cortisol and melatonin and also the effects of late-onset sleep on health, mental health, performance, depression, anxiety, overweight and obesity.
