Today we're going to talk about a certain study that has been circulating the news regarding hydroxychloroquine.
According to the news, this study found that hydroxychloroquine was not effective and was even associated with a higher death rate.
• This study wasn't even published yet.
• This study wasn't peer-reviewed.
• This study was a retrospective study.
A retrospective study means that they're using data or events that happened in the past. This was done in a VA hospital. They took the data from the patient's charts and summarized it. This study included 368 patients, and they compared three groups of patients.
The first group was treated with hydroxychloroquine. The second group was treated with hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin. The third group was not treated with hydroxychloroquine.
Hydroxychloroquine is an ionophore. It allows zinc to travel inside the cell. If there's enough zinc in the cell, this can potentially inhibit the machinery that's causing the replication of the virus. It sounds promising, especially when combined with zinc. In this study, they did not use zinc. Vitamin D was also not involved. Vitamin D is incredibly important in supporting the immune system and inhibiting cytokine storm.
Each of the groups in the study is very different. Severe cases of COVID-19, as in the first two groups, require hydroxychloroquine. Less severe cases do not, as in the last group.
This study emphasized that the group that wasn't treated with hydroxychloroquine had 18 deaths versus 27 deaths in the group treated only with hydroxychloroquine.
Without understanding this study, it appears that the drug could make you worse. But, in reality, the groups treated with hydroxychloroquine were much sicker than the group that wasn't.
