WeWork CEO Returns $5.9M to WeWork For Trademark 'We'

WeWork went public in the summer of 2019, rebranding themselves at the same time as ‘The We Company.’ During this time, the company paid its cofounder, Adam Neumann, $5.9 million for the rights to the trademarked word ‘we’. As co-founder, Neumann had retained rights to the trademarked ‘we’ as his own intellectual property, but sold it for nearly $6 million when the company went public.

Shortly after this transaction, as a result of public upset, Neumann returned the $5.9 million, allowing the company to retain the rights to the trademarked ‘we’. Why did the company get to keep the trademark even though the money was returned?
