Simeon's Treasure; Luke 2:26-32

Delivered during the Sunday morning worship service, 6/6/2021. An old man stands in a busy court of the Temple in Jerusalem cradling a newborn Hebrew baby in his arms. His peasant-parents stand nearby and look with amazement as this man sings a beautiful hymn, filled with deep and trembling emotion, of the nature and purpose of the child he holds in his arms. The man's name is Simeon and the child as we know is Jesus. We will study carefully the meaning of the song the old man sings, keying on words like "now", and "Lord" and "servant" and "depart" and "peace" and "salvation" and "light" and "glory" and "Gentiles" and "Israel". When we put them all together, we will realize what the old man realizes-- that the child in his arms is the greatest, most valuable Treasure mankind has ever received. Ultimately we will share in the old man's joy as we come to appreciate the eternal glory of Simeon's Treasure.
