Note: see below for info on 4-Stroke bikes.

Step by step instructions and video examples of how to get your motorcycle started and running after sinking it in deep water. The bike in this video is a 2002 KTM 250 EXC. The engine (cylinder) was completely full of water when we start the recovery. This method has never let us down in our almost monthly bike drownings! - After getting your bike running be sure to let it run normally for at least 30 mins or so to ensure all water is cleared out of the crank area. If you are unable to get the bike started - it is imperative you pull the top end and clear out any traces of water in the crank areas, bearings, power valves, etc.. If you let a wet engine sit for even a few days it will cause substantial damage.

4 Stroke Bikes:

I do not believe it is advisable to flip a 4 stroke upside down due to the fact that your crank-case oil will be collecting in the cylinder and bottom side of your piston.

For the most part, unless it has been in the water a long time, a 4 stroke will will be easier to evacuate the water from the cylinder area as it does not get "underneath" and into the crank areas as it does in a 2 cycle engine. The best bet for a 4 Stroke is to simply pull the plug, and cycle the engine over repetitively until you can see no water or mist coming out of the plug hole (You can lift/prop the rear tire off the ground and cycle the motor the same as we show in this video by rotating the back tire. Just keep the bike/motor upright during the process.) Dry off the plug and attempt to fire her up. - repeat this procedure until the bike starts.
