Volkswagon Got Sued for Stealing Art

Ai Weiwei, an artist, filed a lawsuit against Volkswagen after they used his artwork without his permission.

In Europe, moral rights (like Ai Weiwei’s right to determine what happens to his own artwork) are upheld much more forcefully than in common law countries like the U.S. or Canada. Ai Weiwei sued for two reasons:
1. He was never credited for the creation of the artwork
2. The integrity of his work was compromised; i.e, modified

So what happens when you don’t trademark your own work, but someone uses it without permission? What happens if your work is in a public place? Can it be used by anyone?
