This week brings Part II of the News Trends & Stories of our 3rd Quarter Wrap Up which is presented throughout October in four parts:

News Trends & Stories, Parts I & II: During the first two weeks of October, we highlight the top news trends and stories with Dr. Joseph Farrell. Last week in Part I, we looked at Economy and Financial Markets and Geopolitics. This coming week in Part II, Dr. Farrell and I will cover Science and Technology and The Big Questions. Make sure to check our web presentation for the complete listing with links of News Trends & Stories for the 3rd Quarter.

Financial Market Roundup: In the third week of October, we will combine a written Blockbuster Chartology from master technician Rambus with Catherine’s Equity Overview. Make sure to check our web presentation for the complete roundup of financial market charts on September 30.

Theme – Investment Screening: Can We Filter for Productive Companies?- Finally, we look at our big theme. We look at the investment screening industry to ask whether we can filter the markets to find fundamentally productive companies. In August, investors in private prison companies found their stock price down by almost 50% because of changing government policies. And Wells Fargo stock is down by 18% this year, in part because of a scandal related to falsification of accounts. As the debt-financed growth model comes to an end, investors in companies that are not fundamentally productive face a new set of risks.

In Money & Markets this week I will discuss the latest in financial and geopolitical news.

In Let’s Go to the Movies, I will review Pelé: Birth of a Legend. One theme in the movie is how to get back our ginga, which is the creative rhythm of running and swinging on the soccer field, which is the crucial element of capoeira, which is martial arts blended with dance, acrobatics, and music. As one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century, the story of Pelé’s early life is both inspiring and instructive for times such as these.
