I love history, and I love visiting the National Battlefields in the United States. Walking the hallowed ground on a foggy yet peaceful summer's morning gives one time to envision what a similar morning must have been like the day of battle, and to reflect on the sacrifices made by those that have come before us. I painted this piece to capture the emotion and serene beauty of these national treasures.

This painting is based on a picture I took while visiting the Gettysburg National Battlefield this past June. The honeysuckle flowers were in full bloom, and produced a fantastic aroma. The foreground fence is the location of the famous Union defensive line during that battle. The confederate soldiers crossed this field during what has now come to be known as 'Pickett's Charge' on the afternoon of 3 July, 1863. They concentrated their efforts at the small grove of trees you can see on the left of the horizon line in this painting; otherwise known as 'The Angle'. Behind that grove lies Little Round Top. The clouds above represent this charge. This day and location has long been considered the Highwater Mark of the Confederacy.
