THE ADVENTURES OF JINGLE BELLS (1)
His name is Jingle Bells and we adopt him from an animal welfare society in South Africa near Cape Town. When I looked at more than 30 kittens that were up for adoption, this kitten immediately played with my fingers through the cage and his adorable face and energy was just too much for me. I simply could not resist and just had to adopt him. Jingle Bells has an enormous amount of energy and his playfulness just does not have an end. He can run around and investigate everything he sees for hours on end. The first couple of nights he slept next to my body with his head on my shoulder. I had to be very careful when I turned over and not turn onto this fragile kitten's body next to me. Needless to say that I could hear him purr for a long time every time until he fell asleep. During daytime Jingle Bells sleep on my computer desk just above my keyboard.
If Jingle Bells sees mosquitoes or flies, he immediately chases after them and tries to catch them. Even ants do not escape his incredible vision and must be investigated on the spot. It took Jingle Bells just hours from the moment we adopted him, until he felt comfortable enough to show us all his talents. I could not believe my eyes when I saw him jumping comfortably over a distance of 60cm from the couch to the bed and that in his first couple of hours with us. But wait, there is more. To my further surprise Jingle Bells climbed up our bed with his tiny claws within about two seconds, something that I did not expect a seven weeks old kitten would do. Looks like I still have to learn a lot from kittens.
We just love to see Jingle Bells running from point to point. He looks like a honey badger with a kind of bounce in his running and at times he jumps just like a rabbit over the smallest of obstructions. Just a pure joy to look at. I also never knew that small kittens could be so incredibly fast, he is like lightning from one spot to the next.
Even at this small age this kitten is very clever and it only takes anything we show Jingle Bells once, to remember it forever. He uses his super smell and sound abilities compared to humans, to quickly make connections of what is good and what is bad for him. They say a cat’s hearing is about 14 times better than humans while their eyesight is about 12 - 16 times better. Jingle Bells inquisitiveness also knows no bounds. Everywhere I go or touch something with my hands, there he wants to be, to sniff at my handiwork and keep me company.
We have another cat named Black Panther or Panther in short. It is a 17 month old male cat, also with black and white colors and with the most beautiful green eyes. In the first couple of days we were afraid that Panther would hurt Jingle Bells, but to our surprise he immediately was comfortable with Jingle Bells and even acted as his protector. His eyes follow every move Jingle Bells makes and if Jingle Bells meows more than once, he immediately jumps up and goes to look for Jingle Bells if he cannot see him. We expect the two of them to sleep together within a couple of days. Panther is a very independent cat and at this stage still likes to sleep alone. We are looking forward to seeing what will happen in that regard.
