Manchester United are deliberately stalling with their bid to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, according to reports in Spain.

After securing a €85 million (£73.1m) deal to bring Jadon Sancho to Old Trafford, United have now made the France international their priority target to strengthen their defence.

Reports last week claimed that United have agreed personal terms with Varane, with the 28-year-old set to sign a five-year contract with the Premier League club.

United, however, have yet to reach an agreement with Real Madrid over a fee for the World Cup winner.

According to Marca, Madrid are holding out for a €50m (£42.8m) fee for Varane but United are looking to lower that valuation and will hold off submitting a bid in order to force the Spanish club into accepting a reduced offer.

Varane has just a year remaining on his current contract with Madrid and the club have accepted that the centre-back, who joined in 2011, will not sign an extension as he is looking for a new challenge.

Madrid are therefore open to selling Varane this summer as they do not want to lose him on a free transfer when his contract expires next year.

Marca also reports that Varane is not looking to force his exit and has no intention of seeing out his contract in order to leave on a free next summer.
