"Kimigayo" (君が代, Japanese pronunciation: [kimiɡajo]; "His Imperial Majesty's Reign") is the national anthem of Japan. The lyrics of "Kimigayo" are probably the oldest among the world's national anthems, and they are also the world's shortest.

君が代は
千代に八千代に
さざれ(細)石の
いわお(巌)となりて
こけ(苔)の生すまで

(Poetic Translation by Basil Hall Chamberlain)
Thousands of years of happy reign be thine;
Rule on, my lord, until what are pebbles now
By ages united to mighty rocks shall grow
Whose venerable sides the moss doth line.

Lyrics: Waka Poem; Heian Period (794–1185)
Music: Yoshiisa Oku, Akimori Hayashi and Franz Eckert; 1880
