After the Second World War, Italy became a republic and "Il Canto degli Italiani" ("The Song of the Italians") was chosen, in 1946, as a national anthem. It was written by Goffredo Mameli set to music by Michele Novaro in 1847. The song is best known among Italians as the Inno di Mameli ("Mameli's Hymn"), after the author of the lyrics, or Fratelli d'Italia ("Brothers of Italy"), from its opening line.

(English Lyrics / Translation)
Brothers of Italy,
Italy has woken,
Bound Scipio's helmet
Upon her head.
Where is Victory?
Let her bow down,
For God created her
Slave of Rome.

Refrain:
Let us join in a cohort,
We are ready to die.
We are ready to die,
Italy has called.
Let us join in a cohort,
We are ready to die.
We are ready to die,
Italy has called! Yes!

God created her
Brothers of Italy,
Italy has awekened,
with Scipio's helmet
girds her head.
Where is the victory?
show the hair to her.
Slave of Rome
God created her
