MMA: Poirier wins trilogy bout as McGregor suffers ankle injury

Conor McGregor’s UFC 264 fight with Dustin Poirier ended with a rather scary injury after the Irishman appeared to break his left ankle in the first round.

Dustin Poirier emerged as the victor of his trilogy bout against Conor McGregor, after the Irish superstar apparently suffered a broken ankle towards the end of the first round.

LAS VEGAS -- The score was supposed to be settled at UFC 264. Unfortunately, a freak injury to Conor McGregor may force an eventual fourth fight.

Dustin Poirier scored a first-round stoppage of McGregor after the Irishman broke his ankle when he stepped back awkwardly.

Their bout, the main event of UFC 264, was the third meeting between McGregor and Poirier. They split their first two matches: McGregor defeated Poirier via stoppage at UFC 178 all the way back in September 2014, but the American got his revenge at UFC 257 this January.

Poirier arguably got the better of McGregor in the first round, but it was an injury that ultimately put a stop to the contest. Reports from the arena in Las Vegas said that McGregor broke his ankle late in the first round.

The official decision is a technical knockout for Poirier via doctor stoppage.
