Cutter Mattock Tool Restoration | DIY

Did anyone know that this was called a cutter mattock? I always called it a pickaxe growing up, although I remember hearing the name grub axe. Fortunately, the internet is here to teach me new things, so I can say them and sound smart.

This old cutter mattock has been rattling around for a while in my garage. I think it came from my parents house, or even my grandparents house, and I remember using this thing when the old handle was cracked and had screws hold it together. We used it to plant little pine seedlings. The mattock is great for digging holes

I used vinegar to remove the rust, then rinsed in water and wiped it down with WD-40 to prevent any new rusting. Then used files and a Dremel tool to smooth out some defects and sharpen the cutter and adze. The handle I found at the hardware store didn't fit, so that took a little custom work, but it all came together.
