Derek Charles Johnson’s performance of “Be Thou My Vision (Be My True Light)”

I was playing around with this familiar hymn, Be Thou My Vision, and in the turnaround sections between verses, I started adding a separate lyric line. “Be Thou my vision, Be my true light, High King of heaven, my soul satisfied.” With hymns, I don’t often rework or reimagine melodies. But sometimes an additional line seems to fit. In a lot of our modernized worship music, bringing hymns into our context is just a small way to keep them fresh and to appeal to a multi-generational audience. I love that so many hymns can do that and that they still speak, no matter how old. Be Thou My Vision is (again) a huge favorite of mine. There’s so much depth in these lyrics; the writer desires a true closeness with the Lord. I say this a lot but these truly are some of my favorite lines of any hymn out there.
