Recently during devotions I was reading the account of Jesus being in the boat with his disciples. He lay asleep "in the hinder part of the boat" while a "great tempest" arose. The stormy winds were blasting and the sea became treacherous and was filling up the boat. They all thought they were going to die. They awoke Jesus and He arose and "rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Peace, be still," and there was a great calm. Later on we read that Jesus sent His disciples into the boat, but he stayed behind and went into the mountain alone to pray. In the middle of the night another great storm unleashed upon the disciples, and Jesus saw them "toiling in the rowing."

Then Jesus came to them walking on the sea and went into the boat and the "winds ceased." You see that was the second time Christ manifested Himself, His glory to His men. Elijah is another story of a "second time" visit. He was afraid, depressed and wanted to die. But the Angel of the Lord, which is the pre-incarnate Christ, visited him and gave him bread and a cruse of water. Afterwards, "the angel of the Lord came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee. And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God."

Is it not good and comforting to know that the angel of the Lord came again the second time? We never come to the place where we pass out of reach of the compassion of God. "His compassions fail not they are new every morning, great is thy faithfulness." (Lamentations 3:22-23).There have been times for nearly all of us when we have felt the truth of the angel's word: "The Journey is too great for thee"; but have we not always found the Bread of Life and Water of Life ready for our sustenance? And in the strength of that food, we have gone on, and shall go on even unto the mount of God.

"David was the last one we would have chosen to fight the giant, but he was chosen of God." ~Dwight L. Moody
