Officials say a Philippine military plane carrying troops crashed and exploded into flames after missing the runway in the country's south, killing at least 45 people and injuring more than 50. Onboard the C-130 Hercules cargo plane were 92 passengers, most of whom were fresh army grads when the plane crashed as it attempted to land on Jolo island in Sulu province at lunchtime on Sunday.
The destroyed body of the jet was engulfed in flames in photos shot by local media source Pondohan TV and posted on Facebook. Near the crash site, a plume of heavy black smoke ascended above the houses.
A military plane disaster in the Philippines has claimed the lives of at least 29 individuals.
