Making A Stainless Steel BBQ Grill

Making a stainless steel BBQ grill. By popular demand, here is the entire process of fabricating my stainless steel charcoal grill. I did this because I was unhappy with the poor quality of steel and stainless steel grills on the market and I needed a job I could do that would help me to learn to tig weld better, that was not for a customer. I attempted to document the entire process but the GoPro's don't always share the same work ethic as me, and decided not to work at certain times.

The box is constructed from 10 gauge 304 stainless steel. The grill grate is constructed from 1/2" and 3/8" 316 stainless dowel rods. The chimney is made from 2.5" x 2.5" 7 gauge ( 3/16) 304 stainless steel tube. It doesn't need to be that thick, it's just what I had on hand. The coal rack is made from 1"x1" 304 stainless steel angle. Chimney damper and draft air inlet adjustment control are made from 18/8 stainless steel with 1/4 20 x 1" bolts . And the grill grate slides are made from 3/4"x3/4" 304 stainless steel angle.

Fun fact: The lid is so sneaky heavy that most people think there is some kind of lock on it when they try to open it for the first time. No lock, just the weight of all that sweet, sweet stainless steel.
