Pigeon Island National Park is one of the two Marine National Parks in Sri Lanka. The National Park is located 1 km off the coast of Nilaveli, a coastal town in the Eastern Province and has a total land area of ​​471.429 hectares. The name of the island is derived from the rock dove. The National Park has some of the best coral reefs left in Sri Lanka. Pigeon Island was designated a sanctuary in 1963. In 2003, it was renamed a National Park. This National Park is the 17th largest park in Sri Lanka. During the colonial era, the island was used as a shooting range.
