The dog is one of the animals that people love the most.
The dog, which we also call a dog, is one of the most cherished animals in the world. He was one of the first animals to be domesticated and trained to live with people. The dog's scientific name is Canis familiaris. He is in the same family as the coyote, the wolf, the fox and the jackal.
Despite having certain characteristics in common, dogs can have very different sizes, shapes and colors.
The dog is a mammal with sharp teeth, excellent sense of smell and good hearing. Each of its four legs ends in a foot, or paw, with five toes. Each finger has a soft base and nail. A fur coat keeps the dog warm. He refreshes himself by putting his tongue out of his mouth.

All over the world, people keep dogs as pets, guard animals, or work animals. Some dogs do not live with humans and are free in nature in some parts of the world. These dogs usually live in groups called packs. A wild dog called a dingo lives in Australia.

Dogs wag their tails to show they are happy.
Dogs demarcate territory and mark their property by urinating (peeing) and rubbing themselves on things to leave their scent. But they also love being around people and other dogs. People can train them to obey simple commands.

Dogs make sounds like barking, howling and growling. They also use movement to communicate. For example, when a dog wags its tail, it means it is happy. If he shows his teeth and growls, he's threatening.

The female gives birth to a litter of young about two months after mating. The litter can have two to twelve puppies. Newborns are blind and deaf and depend on the mother for food and protection. Puppies become more independent when they are three or four months old. Dogs live for ten to fifteen years, or a little longer.

Dogs and Humans
Dogs have lived with humans since prehistoric times. The ancient Egyptians believed that dogs were sacred. The Romans had guard dogs. In ancient Chinese palaces, people kept small dogs in the sleeves of their tunics.
