Just because a song was a massive hit does not mean that it has staying power. After all, Barry Sadler’s “Ballad of the Green Berets” was the number one single of 1966, beating out both “Good Vibrations” and “California Dreaming.” And when was the last time you were singing along to Sadler’s lyrics? Despite its popularity, at the time it’s just not a song played at your local department store.
