The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is a species of filter shark and the only extant member of the family Rhincodontidae and of the genus Rhincodon, which belongs to the subclass Elasmobranchii. It is the largest living fish and by far the largest non-mammalian vertebrate in existence. The largest individual recorded had a length of 12.65 m and a weight of about 21.5 tons.
The whale shark is found in open tropical ocean waters and is rarely seen in water temperatures below 21 degrees Celsius. Estimates suggest a lifespan of about 70 years, but the whale shark's exact longevity is difficult to calculate. The whale shark has a very large mouth and feeds by filtration; only two other species of shark exhibit this behavior: the bigmouth shark and the elephant shark. They feed almost exclusively on plankton and are generally not a threat to humans.
