Catatumbo lightning is a meteorological phenomenon that occurs in the Lake Maracaibo basin between Venezuela and Colombia,1 mainly in the southern part of the lake and in the lower basin of the Catatumbo River, in the border area between the two nations, the river from which it gets its name. Scientists from the Center for Scientific Modeling indicate that it would be more appropriate to speak of the Catatumbo lightning, because it tends to occur in multiple sites each night, but from a distance it can be seen as if it were a single phenomenon. It is one of the 5 best known natural phenomena worldwide.
