6 Spotted Cat Breeds
In today's video, we're going to talk about the 6 Spotted Cat Breeds.
Spotted cat breeds are sought after for their exotic beauty. Some even have the blood of their wild counterparts coursing through their veins. But they’re much more domesticated than their wild cousins and make great pets.
“Many people dream of being able to have one of the big, beautiful wild cats in their living room. But that being pretty unrealistic, the next best thing is one of the small domestic cats with the look of their bigger kin,” says Vickie Fisher, treasurer for The International Cat Association, TICA. Here are the 6 Spotted Cat Breeds.
Bengal.
The Bengal could never be called delicate. They’re athletes: agile and graceful with a strong, muscular body, as befits a cat who looks as if they belong in the jungle. Despite their wild appearance, Bengal cats are actually quite affectionate with their human families. That said, they also have high energy and a fun-loving, playful side. They want to stay active and need a home that can match their energy.
The Bengal is the only spotted domestic cat breed with well-defined markings called “rosettes,” similar to those found on leopards, jaguars, and ocelots, and can also have a marbled pattern,. Bengals come in a variety of colors, including golden, bronze, mahogany, gray, and silver, with spots or marbling in black or browns.
Because of the Bengal cat’s uniqueness, Royal Canin developed a cat food specially formulated for him. The optimal high-level protein and fat help build and maintain lean muscle mass, and the Y-shaped kibble of Royal Canin Bengal cat food is adapted to the Bengal’s jaw shape.
On the rare occasions that he isn’t swinging on chandeliers or swimming in your pool, the affectionate Bengal will be pleased to sit on your lap. It goes without saying that he will share your bed. And yes, he steals the covers.
Egyptian Mau.
The Mau’s most striking characteristic is his spotted coat in silver, bronze, or smoke, pale silver fur tipped in black, closely followed by his large gooseberry-green eyes.
The medium-length coat has a silky, fine texture in the smoke coloration and a dense, resilient texture in the silver and bronze colors. The body is covered randomly with distinct spots that can be small or large, and round, oblong, or other shapes. The forehead bears an M shape, the cheeks are adorned with “mascara” lines, and the tail is banded, ending with a dark tip. On the pale belly are dark spots that resemble “vest buttons.”
The Egyptian Mau has green eyes and comes in three accepted colors: silver, bronze, and smoke. Its striking spots are scattered randomly, with no discernable pattern. Those fortunate enough to possess an Egyptian Mau know the breed’s exceptional intelligence, sensitivity, and loyalty. Although its exotic look gives the breed an aloof air, the Egyptian Mau is very family-oriented.
Ocicat.
The Ocicat has a medium-size to large body. He is muscular yet graceful. Large ears corner the modified wedge-shaped head. Some Ocicats have tufts of fur that extend vertically from the tips of the ears. Large almond-shaped eyes angle slightly upward and can be any color except blue. The lengthy tail has a dark tip.
The Ocicat stands out for his spotted coat, which gives him the look of a small wildcat. The short, smooth, satiny coat comes in 12 colors, all of which feature dark thumbprint-shaped spots on a light background. Like the Abyssinian, which was one of his ancestors, the Ocicat has what’s called an agouti coat, meaning that each hair has several bands of color, the exception is the tip of the tail. The spots are formed where those bands of color meet.
The Ocicat’s powerful, muscular physique belies its loyal nature and affectionate temperament, says Hogan. The breed comes in four colors: black, chocolate, lilac, and silver. Some Ocicats have classic, mackerel and ticked tabby coats, which are beautiful but aren’t correct for the show ring. Those cats have the same great Ocicat personality, however, and make wonderful pets.
